On asphalt sites, particular vigilance is required in terms of safety at work. Passing traffic, hot paving mixes and tripping, among other things, can cause accidents at work. Asphalt rock acquired the Priima learning environment to improve the efficiency of training at its sites across Finland.

Asphalt Rockers performs asphalting and earthworks with its own staff as well as subcontractors. In addition to asphalt workers, there are also drivers of bulk trucks and wheel loaders, as well as traffic controllers.
“Safety is extremely important in our industry. As the main contractor, we are responsible for training everyone working on our sites. We wanted to manage training centrally in one place,” says Mika Kortene, HR Director at Asfalttikallio.
Priima helps keep inductions consistent
The paving work is seasonal, so autumn 2023 was a good time to start working together. Courses were brought to Priima during the winter and the online training platform was launched in March 2024. New contractors who started in the summer season quickly increased the number of users tenfold.
The introduction of Priima was a big step towards more consistent quality of inductions. “The e-learning modules have enabled us to distribute the same information to all construction sites around Finland, thus improving the quality of the induction training,” says Hannu Heino, Asfalttikallio’s Occupational Safety and Health Manager.
In the event of an accident, the employer or main contractor must be able to prove that the training has been carried out. Before the introduction of the Priima learning platform, performance records were collected in the form of signatures on paper after the induction session. Now, information about the approved course completion is automatically recorded and the completion can be verified without any gaps.
Online courses are automatically distributed to different user groups
In the past, sharing induction materials and managing information has also been a challenge. “Not all our employees have an Asphalt Rock email address and therefore no access to our intranet. Priima acts as a material bank of training and other guidance for them, which has been very useful for us,” says Kortene.
When a person first logs on to the learning platform, the right induction courses are automatically opened for them. With hundreds of successful completions, there have been few questions about user support, which is a sign of ease of use.
“It is convenient for the end user that the platform can use copies of old course content and edit the content or structure of the courses – you don’t always have to start from scratch,” Heino says. In the future, there are plans to introduce training courses on quality, project management and data protection, among other things.

The learning platform is integrated with the HR system for data transfer
Priima and Asphalt Rock HR system LeanHRX an integration has been built, where, among other things, the personal data of the own personnel and the job titles of the work sites are imported from the HR system to Priima. This way, even new courses are automatically opened for the right people. Similarly, course performance data is exported to LeanHRX so that frontline staff can easily monitor their team’s training needs.
“We designed and implemented the integrations with the Asphalt Rock and LeanIct teams to ensure that the inductions were communicated to project managers and supervisors as efficiently as possible. Automated reports are allocated by task title to make it easy to track progress of performance,” says Niko Hummastenniemi, Technical Project Manager for Product Development at Saarni Learning and product owner of Priima.
According to Kortene, a big advantage has been that the teams developing the HR system and the e-learning platform work together smoothly, both with each other and with other system providers. “Having systems that belong to the same group has made interface adventures much easier. Cooperation between the teams has also worked well. They are on the same wavelength as us and the service attitude is very good,” Kortene sums up.
